Gisborne, New Zealand

Gisborne is known for it's surfing beaches. We didn't going surfing but we loved going swimming in the ocean! This small town had the best beaches- totally empty, clean and big but not scary waves.
We also checked out the Gisborne Arboretum nearby. It was impressive! It felt more like a huge park with hiking trails, so we ended up spending quite a bit of time there. I loved that attached to many of the trees were tags citing when/where the trees came from.
The best part of Gisborne? Our Airbnb. It was the most special place yet- a large manor run by Helene, who just celebrated her eightieth birthday. I've never met anyone quite like her. She is an artist, writer, and just a very open-minded, open-book type of person. Her home was magical too. We met another couple there (Richard and Doris) who became fast friends. What a place. Definitely a highlight.
Cool book I found at Helene's.
