Provence

When we landed in Paris we asked our Airbnb host for suggestions on our France itinerary. We weren't sure which coast to explore. She explained that she preferred the Atlantic coasts; it is more wild and carefree. When we asked about Provence she just kind shrugged and said "It's just like the movies." Well, the movies make Provence look pretty good, so we did it all!

We spent a sunny, cool day in Aix-en-Provence wandering around. The first part of the day there is a whole section of town closed off with a huge market set up, selling clothes, household goods and food. We made a point to try two of the local specialties- Capri pizza and Calissons- a marzipan-like candy shaped like an almond. They both  lived up to the reputation.

Our second day in the Provence region was our best. We took a day trip to a nearby town- Cassis. Cassis is in the French Riviera and borders the Calanques national park. It truly lives up to it's reputation:

The national park has some great hiking trails along cliffs and ocean inlets that were formed by ancient rivers and streams wearing the land down. We hiked up the cliffs and then down to some of the beaches. Amazing views. After our hike we went into town and had shawarma for lunch with a few beers and artisan ice cream for dessert.  A great way to spend the afternoon! We will definitely be back to the French Riviera someday for a vacation-vacation.
