Tel Aviv, Israel

We had the greatest welcome to Israel by our taxi driver to Tel Aviv. He gave us plenty of tips for things to do and when we said we were from upstate NY he guessed Rochester! Super honest and nice- he told us he would be happy to take us to Jerusalem for the day for 200$...or "you should probably just take the bus from central station and it will only cost you 10$." How sweet is that?

We stayed just a couple of blocks away from the water and it was beautiful. We walked along the beach every morning and it was a great way to start the day. Tel Aviv is booming with tourists and there are tons of sky scrapers! I didn't realize this. It's the place to be! And there is a ton of construction going on too- so many tall buildings going up.
Shortly after we made it to our hostel, we realized this was going to be a tour of falafel. Yes, we had falafel every day. It was wonderful. I must find a baked falafel recipe for back home.

These eggs baked in pita were pretty freaking good. I had shakshuka style in a spicy tomato sauce.

I think the best part of our time here, and possibly on the trip, was our day trip to Jerusalem. It was so jam packed with history and life. It was overwhelming, fascinating, weird, mysterious and confusing. We saw so many awesome sights here. We went to the church where Jesus was buried and is said to have resurrected! And the wailing wall! We saw groups of people doing the stations of the cross walk! For such a tiny place Jerusalem sure has a lot of history. I have to say that the wailing wall was the craziest. I still don't understand what was going on there...singing, parades of people, small groups crowding around tables, freeing balloons into the air and blowing into giants horns are just a few examples of the chaos. An incredibly fascinating day.

Other than that, we spent the remainder of our time exploring several markets and the old town of Tel Aviv. It was a blast. If we were going home from here you can bet your butt I would have stocked up on crafts and scarves. Next time!
