Rome, Italy

Airbnb has been good to us for many reasons- the price, having a stocked kitchen, getting to do laundry for free, etc. But our Airbnb in Rome took the cake with giving us the opportunity for the coolest view ever.

yes, we stayed pretty much across the street from the Colosseum.

Rome was overwhelmingly full of ruins. A real idiot once said something along the lines of "when you walk down the street, you get shot," in reference to Chicago, Illinois. I couldn't get this out of my head when we were in Rome, only it was: When you walk down the street, you see ruins. There are ruins everywhere! It is overwhelming and unbelievable.

Ruins. Yada, yada, yada.

It was so easy to see the top sights. We managed to see the Trevi fountain, the Pantheon, the Altare della Patria, beautiful churches and lots more. We had some pretty decent food and good wine and great cheese.

We made an effort to visit Vatican City, but to be honest, it was a disappointing experience. The hoards of people, buses, extremely long lines and constant hawkers bummed us out. We ended up just walking around, snapped some pictures and left. The line to St. Peter's Basilica was hours long. It is free to get in or you could pay lots of money to skip the line. It was disorganized, chaotic and felt wrong. So we peace'd out and went to the Colosseum instead! Not a bad trade off.

The Colosseum was magical! I highly recommend going in the evening. The light was beautiful, there was no line to get in and it was wonderfully quiet inside. The ticket also included entrance  to the Roman Fort, which I believe was good for two days. I would say this was definitely the highlight of Rome for me.
