Montepulciano and Tuscany

Rich and I are in our zone when we get a rental car. It feels so freeing to hop in and drive where we want, with or without an itinerary. When we left Florence we picked up the car. It's always a stressful 20 minutes trying to get out of the city, but once we do, it is awesome!

We stayed in a small town called Montepulciano, in the rolling hills of Tuscany. Tuscany is just like the pictures...breathtaking. You see yellow and green rows dotting the hills, the colors of the changing grape leaves and the olive orchards. It's stunning.

The car gave us the freedom to roam around small towns all over Tuscany. It's amazing how many tiny towns there are that are filled with businesses. And everyone seems to have a huge garden, regardless of how much land they have.

One particularly good day trip we took was to Pienza. We had read that it is filled to the brim with tourists, but not when we were there! Turns out it pays to travel in the off season! We had the place to ourselves.

We wandered around for a bit and stopped for some lunch. We had sandwiches and our first gelato of the trip! Yum. The area is known for a few different types of wine and we had a lot of fun trying them out! In general wine is super affordable.

Pienza is known for it's pecorino cheese and it was glorious to see all the cheese wheels. Next time we come to Italy, I think we will just focus on Tuscany. And next time we come, we'll have to come home with a few of these wheels for sure.
