Lake Trasimeno and Umbria

A continuation of our favorite type of travel (wandering around with a car) to Umbria! I was really excited to get to Umbria because Rick Steves said it was just like Tuscany without the hoards of tourists. Well, we didn't experience that at all in Tuscany, but Umbria was definitely beautiful as well. Our first stop was to Lake Trasimeno, a sleepy vacation town. Again, it was really special going in the off season. Many restaurants were closed, but we had the whole place to ourselves. Our Airbnb was also pretty special.

It was about a ten minute walk to the lake from where we stayed. Each morning and evening we went for a walk by the water. What a great routine.

We took a quick day trip to a nearby small town, Chiusi. It was unplanned- we were driving around and ended up there. It turned out to be pretty neat! There is an underground labyrinth there and we were lucky enough to find a guide for a tour in English! And we were the only three people down there (me, Rich, the guide). The tunnels are under the city and extend further out; it was originally used as a water filtration system. Pretty darn cool to walk under the city in a tiny, dark maze of tunnels from the 5th-6th centuries BC. Not so cool if you're claustrophobic.

We had the most relaxing time at Lake Trasimeno (it reminded me of the Adirondacks in the early Spring) and Chiusi was a great surprise.
