Stockholm, Sweden

After an amazing week in Orebro, we hopped on a train to check out Stockholm for a few days. What a beautiful city. There is so much to see in Stockholm and we lucked out big time by getting to meet and spend time with Dan's sister and her family while there. They showed us a great time.

We prioritized one of the biggest tourist attractions in Stockholm...Vasa Museum. The museum is an ode to the Vasa Ship, which was famously built and then sank a sad 1,500 meters after take off in the 1600s. It was perfectly preserved underwater and brought up in the 1960s. Really fascinating to see the enormous ship and beautiful artwork that adorned it, all preserved underwater for about 300 years.

Hard to tell in this picture, but the museum and ship is about 4-5 stories high
We were excited to check out Millesgarden as well, another sculpture park right next to the water. We went in the evening, so the sun was just starting to set and there weren't many people around. It was created by the artist Carl Milles and the sculptures are classic and playful at the same time. It was a beautiful way to end the day.

On our last day, we went to Skansen, the largest open air museum in the world. It did not disappoint. Skansen is filled with buildings brought over from all over Sweden, during all different years. It is HUGE. There's also a small zoo-type of area that had brown bears, reindeer, and moose. This was a little odd to see in a big city, like all zoos I guess. Nevertheless the park was fun to see and we could have spent an entire day there.

Some notes about Stockholm:

Everyone should go! There is so much to do and it is totally kid-friendly. Jessa told us even the nicest restaurants won't blink twice if you bring babies or little kids with you.

It is expensive. Most of the museums we went to cost about 20$ per person to enter. That said, I think most of them were free for kids. Public transport was also free for kids.

The food was delicious! I am ashamed to admit I had a preconceived notion that Swedish food = pickled fish. That was so not the case! Although we did try the infamous Kalles Kaviar (in a tube), we also had Swedish pancakes, pea soup, kladdkakka, kardemumma bulles, amazing cheeses, walla crackers, polar bread and somehow the best hot dogs in the world.

Very bike-friendly. Maybe we will try to rent bikes next time? We used them in Orebro and it was a blast. There were bike lanes everywhere and they are separate from the road!

Everyone seems to speak English and is super nice. After meeting Dan's sister for fika, she invited us to spend the day with her family over the weekend. They showed us the engineering university, the botanical gardens and then we all had fika at the Museum of Natural History. Everyone went above and beyond, always. We're hoping to return the favor and host some of our Swedish family in the future!
