Perugia, Italy (still in Umbria)

Perugia was a great home base for our last leg of the Italy road trip. It's a small college town, so it was lively with lots of fun shops and good food- a pretty cool place (although the circle of students on the street under our apartment singing Old McDonald over and over again at midnight was not cool plus weird).

We spent two night here. Our first day we took a day trip to Assisi. We were a little nervous about driving in this hilltop city, but it worked out perfectly (grateful for parking lots outside city walls!). Assisi was beautiful! So stunning. It's a tiny town, so perfect for just a day trip. This is where St. Francis was from, who was opposed to the materialistic lifestyle. Now tourists go to Assisi to buy trinkets that represent him (hehe).

For lunch we had suppli, bruschetta and a focaccia sandwich. The bruschetta was a little disappointing, it turned out to be just a big piece of toast. The focaccia sandwich and suppli were total winners though. Basically a prosciutto and cream cheese sandwich!

It must have been olive harvest season in Umbria, because everywhere we went people were harvesting their trees! It was so cool! Not only were they doing it on big farms, but even just in small yards where families have one or two trees! Now I want to try my hand at brining olives when we get home.

Oh yes, and one of the best parts of Perugia...a MINI METRO. There were six seats on it. It was so cute!
